Neon Signs: Frequently Asked Questions

There are many myths and misconceptions associated with neon signs. Vital Signs has decided to compile a list of frequently asked questions regarding neon signs in order to offer our clients clarity regarding this stunning form of signage.

How Do You Get the Colors in Neon Signs

The gas is the key to this answer. The inert gas (typically neon and argon with mercury particles) inserted into the tubing emits specific colors when electricity is applied. Neon is generally red while argon is blue. Using fluorescent powders, neon signs can be shaded and tinted to create the illusion of specific colors and shades.

How Do You Put the Gas Into the Tube in Neon Signs?

When manufacturing neon signs, the tubes are capped off with two glass electrodes which have a wire passing from the outside to the inside. As gas is pumped in and out, sections are closed off. The vacuum is then heated and specific gases are pumped in to create the neon effect.

How Do You Bend the Glass Tubing in Neon Signs?

The glass tubing in neon signs is bent through a process of rocking and rolling. Burner flames use a gas and air mixture to raise the flame temperature. By heating the tubing, it becomes malleable and is easily shaped.

How Long Do Neon Signs Last

On average, neon signs last anywhere between 8 to 15 years, but this depends on how often they are used and if you take care of your sign. They can be repaired and recharged.
